Your First Treatment

On your first visit, which usually takes two hours, I will ask about your main reason for coming for acupuncture, and then go on to ask questions about your medical history, diet and lifestyle. This is quite a thorough questioning, so I can really understand how well your body is functioning.
I will then take your pulses (these relate to the condition of the 12 organs) and look at your tongue, to assess further, how your body is functioning. With all this information, I can then make my diagnosis and begin treatment.

Initially I like to start with a 'clearing' treatment, especially if it is your first experience of acupuncture.
This involves needles being superficially inserted into points on the back. Your response gives me more valuable information about the condition of your organs and of your energy.
Most people find this is a very calming and relaxing treatment, as it clears trapped energy which may have been blocking your system.

If time permits, I will then go on to begin treatment on the main complaint,

I understand that for some people, the idea of having needles used on them is a little daunting. I am always gentle with my new patients and am very mindful of their possible apprehension.

Where appropriate I will also give advice on diet and lifestyle, as these factors are very important to the smooth running of the mind, body and spirit.

Things to bring to your first treatment

If you are taking any prescribed medicines, please bring details with you to your first appointment. It is also useful, before you come, to write down the approximate dates of any operations or major illnessess you may have had in the past.

When coming for treatment, make sure that you have had something light to eat one to two hours before, also refrain from taking any alcohol.
